Thirty days after relocating, Tess made it into the local DMV to obtain her new state’s driver’s license.
“Would you like to be an organ donor?” the clerk asked.
Tess didn’t like to think about such questions, let alone death. It brought up memories of the day her family changed.
On a trip home from Disney World, their car was struck by a speeding police car in pursuit. Her sister died enroute to the hospital.
Another child needed a new heart.
Tess overheard her parents arguing over their child’s organs.
Her sister’s organs.
“No,” Tess told the DMV clerk.
