“You once told me I could be whatever I wanted to be. Now that I’ve decided what that is, you don’t approve.”
My mother scowls at me. “You kill people, Calvin.”
“I can’t kill people who are already dying, Mom. Besides, it’s what they want. They pay me to help them die.”
She snatches the paper cup of pills off the hospital cart. “Well, your father isn’t taking these. When he dies, it’s because of the cancer, not because of you.”
“He wants this.”
“One day you’ll realize you can’t give everybody what they want.”
“Maybe so, but not today.”
